Our friend Claudia announced that she was bringing a chocolate cake over--as a goodbye for Rebecca and a happy first birthday for John!
This part was hilarious. Becca blew out John's candle and Claudia insisted we had to re-light it for John to blow out. She kept insisting, "He knows how to do it! Just wait, he'll blow it out!" Do you see the confused look on John's face? It was funny watching him try to figure out what we were trying to urge him to do. He never did figure out that the candle was for blowing out (we did have to stop him from trying to grab it a few times, though)...Yum! Chocolate cake is good...especially Claudia's chocolate cake! (Hopefully this doesn't disappoint anyone too much, but John was pretty much horrified when we made him touch the cake himself with his hands. He wasn't happy until we washed his hands clean, and fed him the cake one spoonful at a time! Maybe we'll try again on his actual birthday).
John concluded the happy afternoon by playing with the baby-safe Nativity set Grandmama and Granddaddy sent him: definitely his favorite toy at the present time (he can play with it forever without getting bored):
We're so thankful for our little John! It is hard to believe he will be one year old on the 23rd!

Sounds like he puts manners (i.e. doing what's right) before pleasures--he'll be a son who brings honor to his parents!
