The Manliest Hymn Ever Written

We've been singing a verse of a hymn lately at our meals before we pray. It is a different thing to sing to the Lord before you pray to Him as it fills your heart before you pray, it seems to be a good and healthy tradition. Anyways, at least John seems to look at us with a half smile/astonishment that both of his parents are singing, so he is seems to be enjoying it as well.

So, in picking out the hymns we sing I was looking through our hymn book and re-discovered what I like to call, "The Manliest Hymn Ever Written". The lyrics are particularly Christian, particularly New Testament truth focused, particularly Jesus-like, and thus particularly manly.

Notice the difference between a Christian martyr and a Muslim martyr. One dies praying and forgiving the one who is killing him in order that his killer's soul might be saved and does this by his master's (Jesus) command and example. The other kills others in order to establish his place in paradise at his master's (Muhammad) command and example.

The Son of God Goes Forth To War
The Son of God goes forth to war, a kingly crown to gain
His blood-red banner streams a far: Who follows in His train?
Who best can drink his cup of woe, Triumphant over pain,
Who patient bears his cross below, He follows in His train.

The martyr first, whose eagle eye could pierce beyond the grave,
Who saw his master in the sky, And called on Him to save:
Like Him, with pardon on his tongue in midst of mortal pain
He prayed for them that did the wrong: who follows in His train?

A glorious band, the chosen few on whom the Spirit came,
Twelve valiant saints, their hope they knew,

and mocked the cross and flame:
They met the tyrant's brandished steel, the lion's gory mane;
They bowed their necks the death to feel: Who follows in their train?

A noble army, men and boys, the matron and the maid,
Around the Savior's throne rejoice, in robes of light arrayed:
They climbed the steep ascent of heaven through peril, toil, and pain;
O God, to us may grace be given to follow in their train.

Papa + Son = Fun

The class that I will assist teaching starts next week so I've had a lot of time to be at home with John and it has been a blast. He has learned to say "Thank you" (pronounced 'ta too') when you do something for him and he can (more or less) pick up all his books and put them in the book basket and put all his toys up in the toy bucket (pronounced 'butit') before he gets his bath before bed. So life is good for both of us, as you can see below.

First Sunday School Coloring Page

If you have ever taken one of your kiddos to a Sunday School before you will inevitably end up with a stack of craft items that one of the great teachers helps them with. The vast majority (in my observation) of these craft items tends to be coloring pages. This just happens to be John's first. We are now back at Grand Prairie Bible Church (our home church here in Dallas) and during the roughly 2 and a half hours that we were in Sunday School and the main service it appears that John didn't miss us at all. The toys and attention were well enough for a temporary replacement for us, which is good.

This particular coloring piece by John was unknowingly put in John's diaper bag without a word to us. So we were surprised to see it. Apparently John takes a minimalist approach to his art work....working only with one color (a subtle pastel violet) and only making a few simple strokes in one corner. Simple yet profound.

The best part about the page is the three word sentence at the bottom. In all its 16 month old Sunday School class simplicity...it is true. Jesus loves John...He gives him life, health and all that he has or will ever have. God loves him so much that if He believes in Jesus, treasures Jesus, and repents God will not give him the judgement that he deserves but will give him eternal life. Not bad for a day in Sunday school.

Settling in...

We're back in Dallas, and enjoying moving into the same mobile home we lived in before; we are also enjoying the new carpet and the remodeled bathroom--pleasant changes since the last time we lived here!

Settling into a new place is always plenty of work, and always calls for running lots of errands! Here's a photo of Adam and John setting out on some errands around the linguistics center, with John cozy in his new stroller that we just picked up (free!) from the Warehouse.

Wife-ku

We are now in Dallas and the two day trip from North Carolina was great. At one of the stops Ruth and I composed Haiku poems for each other in a silly moment. As for the context of the poem...the gas station that we stopped at was right next to a McDonalds and Ruth was switching driving with Mom and holding a recently bought sugar filled snack. Well....at least it was funny at the time...

A Good Epitaph

In John 10 :41 people were speaking about John the Baptist and they said this about him,
"John did no miracle, but everything he said about this man [Jesus] was true. "

I would like that to be truthfully said of me some day and written on my gravestone.

"Adam Huntley never did a miracle but all he said about Jesus was true."
