Learning through experimentation

We learn so many things in life by experimenting and seeing what works and what doesn't. I've really enjoyed watching John's eating adventures this week, as he experiments with different ways to get the food into his mouth.

He definitely prefers not to touch his food with his hands, and he works really hard to get food on the spoon, often exclaiming "No!" when the food will not cooperate and the spoon reaches his mouth still empty. Interestingly, as you can see in one of the later photos in the progression below, once the spoon fails to pick up small leftover bits in the morning oatmeal bowl, direct face to bowl contact is considered a viable option for finishing breakfast.
