One of my (Adam) favorite Puritans, Thomas Brooks, in his book Precious Remedies Against Satan's Devices talks about spiritual warfare particularly in the way the enemy works on our minds. In the chapter that I'm reading right now...he is talking about marks of a truly born again person, so that we can biblically face the devil's accusations against us. Or in other words, what is a true Christian like in their thinking and actions as opposed to someone who is only deceiving themself? Brooks says that one of the true marks of a believer is that they just love Jesus, and are generally happy that they have Him even though they may lose many other things in this present life. Lisen to him say it."True grace will enable a soul to sit down satisfied and contented with the naked enjoyments of Christ. The enjoyment of Christ without honor will satisfy the soul; the enjoyment of Christ without riches, the enjoyment of Christ without pleasures, and without the smiles of creatures, will content and satisfy the soul. "It is enough; Joseph is alive" (Gen. 45:28). So saith a gracious soul, though honor is not, and riches are not, and health is not, and friends are not, it is enough that Christ is, that he reigns, conquers, and triumphs. Christ is the pot of manna, the jar of oil, a bottomless ocean of all comfort, content, and satisfaction. He that hath him lacks nothing: he that lacks him enjoys nothing. "Having nothing," said Paul, "and yet possessing everything." (2 Cor. 6:10)"
Adam,
ReplyDeleteA beautiful excerpt. And this quote,"He that hath him lacks nothing: he that lacks him enjoys nothing." is so true. So much of the world is all about fulfilling desires without Christ, or apart from His way. The enjoyment that comes is a much distorted experience than what our Creator intended. I hope that we all will continue to grow in perfect contentment in Christ. "For to me to live is Christ" (Phil. 1:21)

Joyce
