bye for now, Texas

Goodbye for now, highway-side fields of purpley Texas bluebonnets. Goodbye, wide skies, short trees and scrubby prairies. Goodbye, sweet friends and loving community we have known here.

Last night, after getting a new battery and alternator in our van (!), we drove north, watching our last Texas sunset as we crossed the border into Oklahoma. Leaving is bittersweet. Bitter to wave goodbye to dear friends, not knowing when or where we'll see them again. Sweet to realize how wonderful they've been to us...sweet to be on the road towards the homes of beloved family members...sweet that this is the start of our journey "back to Africa."

Little did I know when I first drove through Texas 16 years ago that I would come to love it so much, and for so many reasons. But I did know, when I got off the bus in February (having come from MN), and saw a green field of grass, that it was love at first sight. So, we'll miss you, Texas, but chances are we will see you again someday.
